Very good article. All good web designers should try to build websites for all browsers, and varied internet access, which can be a never ending nightmare but achieveable.
You have touched on some really good points, which designers should remember for general web design.

#Test test test – a MUST MUST MUST!!
#Keep It Simple – is a rule I liveby and remember a lot of smart phones don’t support flash!

Great tips! Two follow-on questions …

On the Test, Test, Test point, does anyone have a good list of emulators to use for initial testing?

Is there a good list of “use it”, “don’t use it” & “can’t use it” capabilities around for moble page in general (like the comment on nested tables)?

when it comes to tip #4. Test, test, test – I like to have a second (third and 4th) set of testing. Every time there is a software upgrade, for example, of anything that is related to you, test again. The only example that pops in head now is not mobile related, but I upgraded to firefox 3.5 and the reddit button on many sites did not work the first day. Not enough testing by someone, somewhere.

Tip #10. Play it safe is one that too many people don’t do. In a way I feel that people just assume that every user will be running a developers configuration, which is just not the case. Back up in the testing phase, remember that the wider the range of products you are testing on, the safer you are playing it.

Some excellent points. Regarding point 4; I believe there are applications that emulate phone browsers. I definitely remember Chris Coyier from http://css-tricks.com using an iPhone emulator that ran on win xp.

While considering all the restraints, I think we should be careful that this won’t turn into another ‘outdated technology’ roadblock. Like what happened when the huge debate started about switching from 800 px wide layouts to 960 px and up because some people argued that there is still a big share of the market running the 800 px resolution.

Sure I still use a Nokia N73 – because I am too poor for a 30 euro a month plan + iPhone – but that’s just me. Most of my friends have switched to phones with big screens and half of them use iPhones. Eventually we’ll get to the point where we should incorporate images and such into phone websites. I think that in the future this issue will go from semi UX, semi technical to completely UX.
