Great insight, very much appreciated. I know I am stumbling upon this rather late, but I have done a few minor freelance projects with NFL and Niners message boards and fan sites, and I have to say, the NFL and their respective teams seem to be very tight-nit when it comes to landing a career position with them. I have been trying for 6 years now to become part of a franchise as you are with the Browns. Sort of a dream scenario if you will. And I have been dismantled at the helm by all whom I speak with. Its very strange. Its almost as if its a secret fraternity.

You really have to know someone within the franchise to get a crack at even being seen by their marketing department.

Do you have any suggestions on how to better approach a franchise?

Again, thank you for your insight.

Yes, nice writeup. I don't think I've ever considered the perspective of designing for a pro sports team. Thanks for the inside look.

I have never worked for a team, but I have had several jobs working on the licensed products side of sports. A lot of this article can really apply there, as well (except getting to meet a lot of famous people... more like only a handful).

This really reminded me of some hot market stuff we used to do. I'd have to watch the Super Bowl or Final Four, etc. from the office so I could drop final scores into a design within seconds of the end of the game. All this so finished goods could be at retail stores all over the country within hours. And of course, we'd have some product already pre-printed listing either team as the "champion", only to have to destroy the set for the losing team.
