Selecting a color has not always been something that was a few clicks away. Color used to be collected from pigments of the earth and then died into fabric. You had to collect the berries to make the purple-ish/reds or dirt to get a brown. Color, binds the creative realm together be it graphic design, photography, interior design, textile design, transportation design etc. Of course you can take pictures in black & white or make a logo black with greys but the colors are where we can experience emotion and that emotion ties us to the image, art, design or product. The colors bring the brand, the curtains, the rug, the subject, the foreground or the background to life.

Do you just start picking colors and hope for the best or is there more science at work? In order to make your color picking easier there are several different color relationships that will help you along the way.

Primary Colors

Primary colors are the basis of the color spectrum. With these three colors, you can create any other color in the spectrum. Red, Yellow & Blue. This is a bold and powerful color scheme when used together.

Secondary Colors

Secondary colors are made by mixing two of the primary colors together. They lie opposite of the primary colors on the color wheel. Green, Violet & Orange. These colors are very bold like primary colors, when used together.

Tertiary Colors

The colors in-between the secondary & primary colors are what make up the tertiary colors. You can create these colors by mixing one primary color and one secondary color. Using tertiary colors as a color scheme is very bright and vibrant.

Monochromatic Colors

Monochromatic color schemes use a single hue (green above) and then use various tints and shades of that original color. They are very low in contrast but can be used very easily because of their simplistic nature.

Analogous Colors

Analogous colors are adjacent to each other on the color wheel. One of the colors is dominate while the others are accents for the main color. These schemes are easy to create and have unity and consistency.

Clash

Clash color schemes pair a first color with a second to the left or right of it’s color wheel compliment. Clash colors are VERY bold and have high contrast. The more colors you add the harder it is to make clash colors work effectively.

Split Complementary

Split complementary colors are created by taking the colors directly beside your original colors compliment. (purple above so yellow is our colors compliment) Split complementary colors can be very difficult to make work correctly. Try using one color as the main color and the other two as accent colors.

Neutral

Neutral colors are a mix of a hue and its compliment and is sometimes mixed with black. These colors schemes are not bright and commanding they can be calm & effective.

Tertiary Triad

Tertiary triads are a set of three tertiary colors that are equal distance from each other on the color wheel. Tertiary triads are some of the least recognizable color schemes. They are very vibrant and comfortable to the eye.

Good design is always personal, and it is often the little touches that impart the unique character of a building. While there is great variety in the work we have done, there are recurring themes that define it as ours.

We like materials that age well, that develop character over time. We look for variations in texture, both visual and tactile, and feel that buildings should have surfaces that beg to be touched.

We were recently contacted by an enthusiastic member of a growing sect of the design and art community, Niels Craens, whose environmentally conscious mindset has crossed into his creative side. Niels is an Upcycling designer. This popular method of green re-purposing of materials to soften the environmental impact created from our over-indulgent consumer society provides our FYC readers with an inspiring showcase of some truly breathtaking creations.

Niels, provided us with some eye-opening facts about an area of our wasteful culture that wrought an imaginative creation that inspired us to not only put together this showcase, but to feature his brilliant design.

Niels Craens

Niels Craens is a graphic designer that has completed extensive research into the advantages and disadvantages of cardboard drinking packages. In response to his findings, he created the ingenious lamp “Enjoy Twice”.

An independent study by Freedonia exposed that in 2010 in the United States only, 236 billion drinking packages will be used in daily activities. In the last few years, we have seen a trend develop, preferring the use of cardboard packages over plastic bottles. The trees used in fabricating the cardboard have absorbed CO2 in an earlier phase, making its packages less harmful for the environment than its plastic equivalent. However, due to for instance its plastic cap and aluminium layer, the used package is not allowed for paper recycling. Often, waste combustion is the only alternative.

For Niels Craens, this is an interesting problem as a designer to take a swing at. The words “Enjoy Twice” shine through the packages that lack aluminium. This makes the text only legible when the lamp is switched on. With this design, he gives an environmental negative a positive twist. This approach can be applied on many other aspects as well. Why go to Ikea when you can personalize your own furniture? Not only does it save money, it saves the environment as well

Mark Langan

Mark Langan is a talented artist that inspiringly uses corrugated cardboard to craft wonderfully intricate artwork unlike anything you are likely to have seen before. This ain’t your momma’s cardboard box…though it technically could be if she lives in Ohio.

Creating one of a kind sculptures via the unique medium of reclaimed corrugated boxes. An obscure material used frequently by all, being transformed into something other than its original intended purpose…aesthetically beautiful three-dimensional art. Corrugated board is a material that can be easily recycled over and over again. I see it as an endless supply source that I purge from my trash and neighborhood, reusing it towards my creations… A form of green art, that makes a definitive statement with its contribution to the recycling movement.

Junior Fritz Jacquet

As we continue in our showcase we come to Junior Fritz Jacquet, a pure joy of an artist who uses recycled cardboard and toilet paper rolls to create an inspired collection of whimsical little masks and characters. So much personality exudes from his weathered looking creations, it is hard to not be inspired by them.

He explores and experiments with folding and crumpling techniques, innovating with his fingers methods undiscovered to create forms and craft poetic objects, that visually enhance any surrounding. The origins of his unique technique are still heavily inspired by the traditional art of origami, using only one sheet of paper.

Michael Yonke

Michael Yonke has found a fascinating outlet in the industrial design arena for his upcycling ventures, using natural materials to upcycle into furniture and much more. These inspired designs flawlessly achieve a balance between a classic and a more modern style.

I advocate for the environment, nature and sustainability by design through my eco-art and furniture. I reclaim, repurpose and upcycle wood, metal and glass into furniture, art and complete interior designs. Material qualities, handmade crafting and unique finishes infuse each piece with stimulating energetic intensity. Upcycling is achieved by repurposing the materials into objects with higher end use value that will endure and inspire for centuries.

Tom Deininger

Tom Deininger is a richly creative artist who uses a variety of discarded materials, including cigarette butts, bottle caps, bits of plastic, metal, and pretty much every other kind of scavenged materials you can think of, to create so many amazingly intricate pieces of exceptional artwork.

Attended Salve Regina University, graduated with Academic honors in art. Upon graduation was selected to execute two large commissions for a local church. With the money he traveled to Europe. Spent his twenties going from place to place setting up studios, selling artwork. In 1999 He moved to Newport, RI. Where he found a large studio space in nearby Fall River, Ma. to execute large found object works. His work is in numerous public and private collections through out the world.

Design is an eclectic field that has many wonderfully creative facets for the creative community to explore. One area that often gets overlooked by a portion of designers, is interior design. Not only is this a vibrant slice of the design pie, but a much more important slice than most conceive it being. A tasty, filling slice to be sure, but there is a functionality that some people do not realize this piece of the pie can fulfill. (…huh, now I want some pie. But I digress.)

When it comes to creativity, most people would accept the analogy of the creative flow. An energetic form that moves through areas, people and design to inspire and move you towards making that creative leap or simply move you on to the next step in your process. Either way, it is generally accepted that the creative flow is an important element in the overall scheme of design. However, some do not realize that they may be acting to hinder that flow without intending to, because as we said, the flow moves through areas. Areas like your office or workspace.

Keeping the area where you work designed to maximize your creative flow is a responsibility people may be skimping on, but to be fair, they may not realize that this is the case. Honestly, unlike with Feng Shui, there are no specific guidelines set to help improve this flow, for it affects us all individually. The precise setup that we have in our office space, may not exactly keep your creative juices stirring, but for us it works in spades. Our environments play major developmental roles in our lives as we grow and learn, and this idea, is merely an extension of this concept.

Inspiring art, musical immersion, and so many other little elements come together for us to keep the creative flow running wildly through our offices, and keep us in that imaginative mindset. For anyone working in a creative field, the interiors where we hang our work hat, function to fuel and feed us the energy and inspiration we need to fill the shoes of a creative. Making sure that these environs are not working against us, but in tune with us, is a key to the process that interior designers have clued in on and the rest of us need to give this devil its due as well.

Now this is not something that we all have the means, and in some cases the ability, to do anything about. At least not in an immediate, overhauling kind of way, but never fear. This flow can be fueled little by little as you discover which elements you need to alter to fix it. Small changes to your office interior can have monumentally creative impacts, and it is something that we all have to experiment with to find the fit for the our own flow. As we stated earlier, there is no structured set of guidelines for us to follow, because each of us is inspired differently. Here’s hoping that you can find yours!

Your Turn

What elements have you included in the design of your interior to fuel your creativity?
