Advertisements take us away to far off places and far off lands theres not much more refreshing than being whisked off to a far-off beach with a nice cold one. Corona advertising has been synonymous to simplicity, bright colors and lots of beer and limes. With bright blues and clean sandy beaches Corona has made distinctive imagery that they own and in turn you recognize instantly. Corona, is a brand of pale lager owned and produced by Cerveceria Modelo at a number of breweries in Mexico. It is one of the best-selling beers in Mexico and is one of the top-selling beers worldwide. Corona beer is available in over 150 countries.

The corona beach is a really interesting site. When you first login (you have to put in your birthdate to access is) and in real-time your “year” is written in the sand. Pretty cool. Then later in the site you have a chance to “draw in the sand”. Interesting functionality that would’ve required some images be taken and gives it a nice “cool” factor.

There is a rush of anticipation one feels upon cracking open a fresh sketchbook. The blank page is a small area yet also an expansive laboratory for the creative process. Over time and around the world, artists have developed many ingenious techniques to advance their creative reach.

Despite this, one of the most powerful means we have to develop concepts is deceptively simple: ink on paper. Far from fading in popularity, the fascination with sketching is exploding. Flickr groups like Moleskinerie, Line Drawing and The Drawing Club are growing as international professionals and hobbyists inspire each other.

Drawing the Line

Simplistic Stylings of Nisims “It’ll come back” campaign

Just because designs are simple or minimal doesn’t mean they aren’t clever. A new campaign created by Marshall Fenn Communications uses these very principles. Marshall Fenn takes on project large and small and their happy to help clients in anyway possible. There based out of Toronto and Las Vegas and have some other creative work that is worth taking a glance at.

To achieve a simple, minimal advertisement you have to reduce everything down to the key elements of the message you’re trying to get across. No bells and whistles just copy and execution. This campaign boils the market down (hair care) into four different “styles”: Black, Brunette, Red & Blonde. Then, using older hair styles that some of us haven’t seen the likes of for years to reference “coming back”. To keepwith the “it’s coming back” theme there is also a boomerang that is woven into each of the vector designs. To top it all off the Nisim, helps stimulate hair growth which makes the campaign a nice, clean, minimal, successful campaign. The backgrounds are simple.

If you’ve gotten bored with traditional motion graphics and haven’t quite gotten into 3D movies yet you’re in luck. Architectural projection mapping is here and ready to boggle your mind. The idea is that you project a 3D object onto a 2D surface. Like the facade of a building. (even though some are 3D with columns and roofs) This begs for some large scale creativity and makes buildings come to life or collapse in front of your eyes. This could begin to get very interesting as technology progresses in the future… There could be all kinds of uses for architectural projection or it could be directly projected on people! Imagine someone walking around the street and buildings move and bend to try and get prospective customers to enter to check out their merchandise. Hirzberger Events – Digital Wallpaper

Once in a while it is nice to not work on a commercial project and have the freedom of doing whatever you want. Fortunately the people at Büro Hirzberger hirzbergerevents.com were totally open to whatever we presented them to decorate parts of their office space in Vienna. My fellow co-workers at Strukt Design Studio strukt.com came up with this digital wallpaper, using 2 projectors to map an entire wall and using VVVV to do the deskewing and to generate the content. Many thanks go to the great guys at Concept Solutions derigel.at to provide us the equipment for the test set-up.

ENVISION: Step into the sensory box. Under this name hides the immersive experience offered by Alcatel-Lucent to its customers at the last Mobile World Congress. An experience-based video mapping designed by the agency and the Department SUPERBIEN New Media Agency \ Auditorium. The public was invited into a cube and discover an artistic vision of the tagline of the event: Transforming the mobile experience.

ACDC Vs Iron Man 2 – Architectural Projection Mapping on Rochester Castle

On the site of a thousand years of violent history, ACDC were pitted against Iron Man in a ground breaking architectural projection mapping project. The front facade of the Great Keep at Rochester Castle, was brought to life using the latest in 3D animation techniques. This onslaught of the senses, saw the castle confront it’s ultimate challenge. Warping, morphing, spewing and collapsing before the audiences eyes. Let there be rock!

3D Projection mapping in the city of Sugarland, Texas for New Years Eve 2010. This video is courtesy of Texas Video & Post who created the content. LD Systems provided sound, lights, video and staging for the 25th anniversary of the city. The equipment included a gramdMA lighting console, Barco HD projectors, Hippotizer HD media server and mapping system, and EV X-Line concert speakers. LDS and TV&P collaborated for this event on the heels of the overwhelmingly successful Glowrama event.

Samsung 3D Projection Mapping In Amsterdam

Perfectly mapped to a historic building in Amsterdam, the projection realistically cracks the building in half, sending debris shattering down before it fills up with water and then drains into a rain forest revealing the new Samsung 3D LED TV!

Two Campaigns, One Theme, Different Outcomes

In the world of Advertising you’re constantly running up against another campaign that covers the same subject matter. Messaging is key when it comes to separating yourself from the competition. The two following ads will probably not be seen in the same demographic because they are from different states. However, one is clearly a winner and keeps it simple while the other doesn’t.

Campaign 1 – Utah

This campaign hinges on small copy, meaningful phrases and repetition with the same backgrounds: either leather or pavement. The pavement and leather is very high contrast with a worn and rugged look. This is meant to tie into the biker demographic. The colors of white/black/yellow/orange are very high contrast bringing the messaging forward. The leather background with orange stitching ties into Harley Divisions brand equity to make another meaningful tie to the biker demographic.

Campaign 2 – Colorado

This campaign has slightly longer copy and a bright / stark color palette combo. Where the bikers are shown in black & white and in “serious” poses. The difference between the colors on the left make them “stand out”. All the ads keep in the same style to make a cohesive group.

Motorcycle safety is a serious concern. There are many accidents caused by other drivers who disregard the safety of bikers on the road. Being on a bike exudes freedom but, it also comes with a price. You’re the smallest vehicle on the road and if you wreck it hurts. (theres no bumpers here) These two campaigns from Colorado & Utah are compared on their messaging and overall ad messaging. Which one do you think is the best?

Colosseo: Reimagining the Roman Coliseum with type (Canon 7D)

In March 2009, Suzanne (wife) and I spent several days in Rome to celebrate our 10-year anniversary. This was also a chance to observe in detail the Coliseum, which I’d already selected as the next subject in my series of letterpress posters (see cameronmoll.bigcartel.com/category/posters).

Over the course of the next 12 months, the artwork was handcrafted character by character, totaling roughly 250 hours of work from start to finish. Characters from the Goudy Trajan and Bembo Pro typefaces form the Coliseum, also known as today as Colosseo (Italian) and originally known as Amphitheatrum Flavium (Latin).

Matt and I decided long ago (early 2006) that we wanted to enter the 7th annual film festival held at Art Institute of Schaumburg called Artimation. Our goal was to make a stand that the Graphic Design majors could very well enter and compete in a very video & animation filled world.

That said, we decided to do a typographical motion graphic piece to one of The Hush Sound’s songs. We love the band, we love typography, we love design, and we love motion graphics. Heavily inspired by motion graphics studio MK12, we decided to try our shot at it.

After working on the latest cover for Macworld Magazine I wanted to show what is involved in making a cover. I focused on the three main areas: the photography, photoshop and design. I chose a time lapse format to convey lots of information in a small amount of time. The only drawback of time lapse is that since half a day goes by in 30 seconds, the whole process seam so easy! Lots of details were left out of the design process (like the cover meetings and rounds of layout options). I began to photograph the design process after the layouts had already been narrowed down to just three cover designs.

Kuroshio Sea – 2nd largest aquarium tank in the world from Jon Rawlinson

The main tank called the “Kuroshio Sea” holds 7,500-cubic meters (1,981,290 gallons) of water and features the world’s second largest acrylic glass panel, measuring 8.2 meters by 22.5 meters with a thickness of 60 centimeters. Whale sharks and manta rays are kept amongst many other fish species in the main tank.

The Olympics draw out on a micro level, the emotions, pride, contentions and drama which each of us experience as members of the human race. But if you think all of the drama ends on the track, think again! It extends all the way to the visual brand which has been a magnet for international scrutiny and is steeped in historical controversy. Amazing as it may be that the brand has been able to survive in its constant state of renewal, its survival might be best explained by a closer look at the 2010 iteration and the people behind it.

Months of research and strategic involvement bring us a clean & focused look for the familiar theme, giving the ancient Olympic brand a surprisingly ‘current’ feel. This look is perpetuated through an exceptionally executed campaign which seamlessly encompasses both traditional & new brand elements and some truly inspiring illustrations. See for yourself:

Remembering Vancouver 2010’s Design Director “My name is Leo Obstbaum, and I am a dreamer.”

The Design Director of the project: Leo Obstbaum passed away August 21st 2009 at the age of 40, he died of natural causes.

With the Vancouver Olympics as his last project, it effected me deeply to realize that his final designs will reach and touch the world. We only wish he could have been here to see it with us.

One of his very good friends Mark Busse wrote a detailed article about Leo after his passing. You should read the article over at GDC/BC Blog.

Whether you freelance or work at an agency, you are bound to have heard this from a client at one point: “We are trying to cut printing costs, so change this 4 color process piece to be two color”. Your heart sinks… Now, you have to completely rethink the piece using only two colors.

Its always hard to hear, but in my experience, some of the best executed ads/designs/brandings have been two color. Why? Simplicity!
