Creative Discussion – How Do You Beat The Creative Block?
As we strive to engage the creative community here at Fuel Your Creativity, we would like to create an on-going dialog with our online friends and colleagues. Here we will be posting small questions about the creative process in an attempt to initiate that discussion. So this will be our first topic to broach with the creative community, feel free to chime in below in the comments. After leaving the discussion open for a week or two, we will be compiling some of the responses into a post on the topic at hand.

How do you beat creative blocks?
Okay, not to go all Mike Myers, but…Discuss:

For anyone interested, this discussion, and specifically, Maria’s question caused a spin-off post on Fuel Your Writing, which covers Getting the ‘It’ Start
Lots and lots of lovely coffee, and a bath..a bath as soon as a creative wall appears
To Rob on your July 15th post. I am just seeing this. You are basically correct about my “getting the first sentence down is key” comment. Thing is, for me, usually when I do get that first sentence down, it is “great.” Not sure how this works, but I rarely change that first sentence even though I may edit the hell out of the rest of the article. It is a matter of being ready and sometimes maybe the deadline forces me to be ready before it is too late. Stress is usually positive for me in this regard. I am happy to have found this site because the creative aspect of what I do often gets lost or forgotten, gotta love what one can find from Twitter posts.

For those of you who are interested, the Creative Discussion had an extension this month with the post Battle of the Bands a few days ago. We have gotten some great feedback on which bands are the ones folks use to get their creativity going.
Also, tomorrow, we will be posting the wrap-up to the discussion, so make sure you check it out!
Hi
Interesting article, I personally use Twitter to beat the creative block, it can be a distraction for a lot of the time but when you are feeling ‘blocked’ then following the right people on Twitter can really inspire you. A link to a new site or design or even just a photo can do it for me.
Cheers

I actually have several tips to beat creative blocks, the most important is to clear your mind and do something distractive instead stressing out with a project. I recently wrote a short article about that on my blog, feel free to step by if you like: http://helios-designs.net/2009/08/how-do-i-find-inspiration-for-web-design/.
Writer’s block, creative block… they all mean the same: Lack of Motivation. When this happens to me, I just step out of my usual surroundings or routine and de-stress. It can be as simple as listening to my favorite music, getting an aromatherapy bath, a nice stroll in the park, a sip of chai latte, or just reading my favorite book – anything I love doing.
Be Buddhist. Throw out your attachment to outcome, the obsession with the quality of product, and get instead into the process. Play. Doodle. Make a mess. Allow yourself the pleasure of fucking-up completely.
