We are currenty doing an article on mind mapping for our blog too. It’s always interesting how idea generation is such a stumbling block when designing. There are so many ways to brainstorm, yet mind mapping seems to be unique in the fact that it enables a holistic view of a particular topic/title, whereas many other methods need the designer to narrow down ideas. We feel it definately has a place in design education. Thank you for sharing such a personal part of your process.

I must say I was very excited about the title of this article, but I felt its missing a large part of what is a interested project.

Inspiration can come from so many different palces such as Magazines (or any print media), friends and family (does Unk George have a hat with a cool patten that would work great for a textured background), Posters, CD Covers even the interior design of your favorite coffee shop.

In short, keep your eyes, ears, heart and mind open to the world around you as its full of inspiration ;)

..well this is what we teach our students, what do the readers of this site think?

Great article with some really useful links in the comments. My process is very similar. I used to spend a lot of money on HOW, Communication Arts and Applied Arts magazines but now I tend to look online for inspiration where there are endless examples and ideas.
