UPDATED: Winner Announced: Recycled Vinyl Showcase with a Spinning Hat Giveaway
It really is not much of a secret that Angie and I have been accused on occasion of airing on the side of the tree-huggers, and if it was a secret, well it’s not much of one now. But we got to thinking the other day while visiting my parents about old records. And we are not talking about records like my still unbroken record of the number of times a little brother can outsmart his older brother, and in turn be subjected to a retaliatory act of violence. I’m smarter, he’s a hitter, but that’s not the kind of records we are speaking of. We are talking LP’s, not RAV’s here, kiddies, so strap those wonderful wayback wheels on to your dancing shoes and lets rock ’n roll! (sorry, I was channeling a little Dr. Johnny Fever there for a moment, but I’m much better now)
During the visit we were looking at my dad’s record collection, which has become more of a museum showcase than a music library since both time and my parents have moved on towards the CD and digital era. With our hippie hats on our collective heads we began wondering about what could be done with these vikings of vinyl when they would rock, but no longer roll. Surely there had to be a creative way to institute a little of the three ‘R’s’ of the tree hugger’s environmental code to this scenario. Reduce was taken care of since the ’rents were not really buying any new LP’s, but what about Re-use or Recycle? Could there be a way to do that? That’s when it hit us. We knew if anyone had figured out a way to do it, and do it with style, it was the design world!
So that is where we turned, and by the rock-gods, we were not disappointed! It was decided then that we would showcase some of these original re-imaginings of old records from some truly green creative minds! To add to that, we contacted one of the online retailers that carry a line of these Recycled Vinyl products and they have agreed to give away one of each of their vinyl designs to one of the readers of FYC! So a big thanks to the folks over at Spinning Hat for hooking up one lucky commenter with their set of Recycled Vinyl which we will feature and talk about more at the bottom of the post. Well for me it was to segragate the trash – a simple thing, hope it will help.
These are pretty inspired!
And it does help. It all does.
I got a plastic bucket and reusable bags for shopping they work better than the old plastic/paper bags.
We have canvas bags, but never thought of the bucket. Would be great especially for the farmer’s markets.
I’ve recently set up an “Old Cellphone Collection for Recycling” box and after reading this article, I think I’ll need to find a good craftsman to create more recycled-vinyl works. I have sooo many records that they can reuse…

I’m trying to throw things away and reuse items instead of wasting. In the future, I hope to do more by saving light and whatnot (which I’m starting to do)

One thing I like to do is make neat honeycomb style shelves out of old tin veggie and soup cans for holding small trinkets and kitchen items, rather than throwing away the cans.
Really cool idea with the cans, David. I think you’ve inspired Angie to rework some of our kitchen!
I recycle the paper I paper from print-outs in the office. I plan to collect the pages to make recycled paper sketchbooks.

I chose to use only organic cotton cloth diapers or fully compostable diapers on my baby (much cheaper than disposables too!), and one of her diaper wraps is homemade, crafted of felted wool from a recycled sweater.

I have been using my own bags to shop and saying NO to paper and plastic. I know I am only one voice but I do feel good about what I am doing.
One voice is all it takes for others to hear and take notice!
I recently set up recycling to be picked up from my house including glass, plastic, and aluminum cans:)
I wish they had that service available here. The closest recycling bins we had got removed! Grrrarrrgh.

I’ve been trying to conserve energy all summer by leaving my A/C on 82-84. And believe me, living in the Southern US … it’s difficult. Fans help, and it’s been raining here every so often which helps, too. But I’m saving money and energy in the process.
Whoa, dude! After living in the southern US for too many humidity ravaged summers to remember, I honestly do not know how you are not cranking that A/C. You are my hero!
It’s definitely not easy, that’s for sure… But I keep a fan pointed at me all the time and drink tons of water anyways so I’m usually comfortable.

I have converted my live-aboard sailboat to electric propulsion (from old poluting diesel) and my goal is to become completely energy sufficient (wind generator) and off the grid.
I recyle old sweaters into new yarn and into mittens, hats, shawls and scarves for presents. It saves me money and it saves on landfill. I use better quality items such as cashmere and a variety of wools.
